You have an event coming up soon. What are the top five things that you need to consider right away? Venue, food and catering, invitations, music, and… that’s right – a photographer!
Not just any photographer, though. You want one that actually knows what he is doing because the memories of that event are going to be special.
Here’s the problem with that:
When you search for photographers or studios or wedding companies online, you get hundreds of search results. Try searching for the best wedding photography service in Kerala alone and you’ll get at least fifty!
Social media showcases piles of beautiful photos and videos. For someone who has no clue about photography and just wants a professional service, this can be really confusing.
So, as the owner of a photography and event management company, I thought that I’d share some insights that I’ve gained over the course of 100+ projects. First off, let me just say that whether you are a photographer or just looking to hire one – the first thing you need to do is clearly communicate with each other.
I’ve seen so many instances where the client was unhappy with the services simply because they were not on the same page with the person they had hired.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the major considerations that you should be making when hiring a photographer for your event:
#1 The Portfolio
A portfolio should be the first consideration for any professional that you are looking to hire. Check out their website, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channel to see their content and get a better feel of their work.
Are they up to date? Are they onboarding the right clients from time to time? Are they going with a master project? What kind of locations have they covered? Do they specialize in only one kind of work?
If you want the best wedding photography service in Kerala, you need to put in some effort and do your homework. The beauty of their content is purely relative. Some of their pictures and videos will seem appealing to you, while others will not. The best thing to do is simply check their content for at least the last six months to get a better feel of their work.
#2 The Brand Story
Before hiring a professional photographer, I would definitely check out the brand. When was it established? How they have evolved? What’s the story of the people you are trusting with the task to capture your story?
I don’t mean that the company should have 20 years of exposure. But do you want a complete amateur handling this? Get to know more about the people you are hiring before you spend a dime.
#3 Reviews
Reviews and ratings are as important for hiring the right photographer as it is for buying new shoes on Amazon.
You need to know how professional these people are and what their other clients have to say.
Spare some time to check out the comments and reviews their clients have on the brand and their services.
Again, this doesn’t mean that the brand should have only 10/10 ratings and reviews. No company or product can satisfy 100% of their clients. But make sure the brand has no serious complaints and problems.
Another thing that’s very important is their general vibe. How the company addresses a negative comment or a dissatisfied client can tell you a lot about what to expect from them. It’s a small thing that no one really bothers with, but it can make a lot of difference.
#4 The Budget
And we are finally there!
Money matters. Your budget will dictate a lot in terms of what you get from whoever you are hiring. Now, this really varies from brand to brand as well as from person to person but in most cases, you will get sample packages.
Of course, you also get to know the break up costs of services. Just keep one thing in mind. Businesses that give you a very customised package after knowing your spending capacity could be overpricing.
Sometimes, it’s just about the quality of the service and not the service itself.
For instance, there is a package that we provide for 100k. There are companies that will offer the same services at 300k and then there are companies who give it for 50 or 60k.
The trick lies in selecting the brand that fits your artistic sensibilities and budget at the same time.
